phil ebiner 1My name is Phil Ebiner.

I’m so happy that you’re here – because you and I are very similar. We both want to create our own path and live a life we truly love. To get us off to a good start, here is my story, where I came from and where I am today.

We’ll start with 2011 when I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television Production from Loyola Marymount University with hundreds of beautiful experiences under my belt and over $100,000 in debt on my shoulders. While traveling the world and doing volunteer work were my biggest passions in college, I soon realized that the real world left little time… or money… for those kinds of luxuries.

After graduation, I bounced around a few different full time jobs – at Participant Media creating short documentaries for their website, at Stanbridge College helping to promote their school with videos, and finally at the University of California Berkeley telling their story with videos. In between and throughout these 8-5 jobs, I did freelance work. I shot weddings. I learned to do motion graphics. I did photography.

While I was doing what I enjoyed – making videos – I didn’t feel like I was thriving. Living in California is expensive, and after loan payments and rent I still felt like I was treading water just to survive. If I wanted to live a life of freedom, without so many worries or stress…

Something had to change.

If I was going to be successful, I would have to do it on my own terms. I started to follow inspirational bloggers like Mr. Money Mustache and Pat Flynn. These guys helped get me on the road towards minimalism, financial freedom, and building online businesses. I learned ways that normal people like me could build their own business doing what they love.

My aha moment was…

when I discovered Udemy, a place where anyone could teach a course. I created my first online course on video editing and launched it in October, 2012. At first, I didn’t believe anyone would want to learn from me. Who was I to be teaching you? I didn’t have any real teaching experience. I didn’t have any brand or following. I quickly learned that that’s okay. I made $62 in that first month. It was the first time that a business idea of mine really worked. The light bulb went from flickering to 10,000 watts! Since then, I’ve created over 40 courses on a range of topics from video creation to motion graphics, photography to building an online business. I even have courses on how to brew beer, understanding baseball, and cat adoption!

I created Video School Online as a place to share all of my knowledge with the world, and that’s a great place to start if you’re looking for articles and YouTube tutorials. Since I started VSO, it’s grown into a six-figure business that includes my online courses, books on Amazon, and giving a way a ton of great information on webinars and podcasts.

Teaching online courses allows me to share my knowledge with people, but also to have the freedom to work on projects I love and earn enough money to thrive. People have used the skills learned in my classes to land jobs themselves and build their own successful businesses. This is what keeps me going – seeing other people’s success stories.

And that brings me to you.

You’re here for one of a few reasons. You might be here because you want me to help you with a video project. You might be here because you want to learn how to build your own online business. Or you might be here on accident. For any of those reason, I’m glad you’re here. I hope that I can help you.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you have any specific questions. You can enroll in some of my premium online courses to start learning. Or you can check out my video work if you want to hire me as a cinematographer, editor, or motion graphics animator.

Where am I today?

ebiner weddingI’ve come a long way since the first years right out of college when I didn’t have internet in my studio apartment and spent 80 hours per week working. Today I work for myself 100% of the time. Most days you can find me working out of my home office. Other days you can find me out on video shoots with my friends. In just under five years, I was able to pay off all $100,000+ in student loans. And now, I am trying to save and invest with the goal of financial freedom in the next 10 years.

Over 110,000 students have enrolled in my online courses, and all of my courses have amazing student reviews. I still do a lot of work in the video and film industry. You can find me working on an animation project for Ghirardelli Chocolate or shooting a documentary to help preserve wildlife. I believe that to continue to be successful as a teacher, I must continue to improve my own real-world skills.

One of the most important things that I haven’t mentioned is…

On March 8, 2015, I married the love of my life Isabel. Everything I do, and everything I work for is to build a life for us (and our cats). Like many of you, I dream of a life with more fun than work. I dream of a life doing the things I want, and not the things society tells us we ought to do. I dream of a life that isn’t dictated by bills and non-necessities. I dream of a life that we choose, not a life that is chosen for us.

That’s what I dream, what about you?
